  • Medical/Orthopedic Massage

Medical/Orthopedic Massage Therapy  is a system of manually applied techniques designed to reduce pain, establish normal tissue tension, and to normalize the balance and the movement of the musculoskeletal system.  The focus is on the treatment of pain and dysfunction of the soft-tissue structures of the body. Whether this pain/dysfunction is due to repetitive stress or accident, the therapist uses various assessment and treatment protocols to identify and treat the tissues involved. Many different types of strokes,  soft-tissue manipulations, and stretching are used to aid in recovery, increase mobility, and release the client from the chronic pain-tension-pain cycle.

These client specific treatments are the main focus at Canandaigua Medical Massage.

  • Pain Management Sessions

Focused pain management sessions are available for various regions of the body. Each treatment utilizes the very latest orthopedic massage techniques to address a multitude of painful conditions. By focusing on specific regions of the body responsible for pain,  treatments can be highly effective and more economical. Pain management sessions are  30 or 60 minutes in duration and available for the following regions of the body:  lower back, upper back, neck, shoulder, arm/forearm/wrist/hand, legs and feet. Treatments are administered with clients in light weight sports clothing such as running shorts and sports bra. Some neck, shoulder and back treatments may require various straps to be moved out of the way. Client draping and modesty is always a top priority.

  • Swedish Massage

Swedish Massage is one of the oldest forms of Western massage and the most common modality practiced in the United States.  Swedish Massage is a relaxing massage using moderate pressure and a combination of soothing strokes to relieve tired muscles, increase circulation of blood and lymphatic fluid, and calm the nervous system.  Swedish Massage is known for its ability to relax clients and dissolve away stress, promoting overall well-being. It is based on five basic strokes: effleurage, a long, gliding stroke; petrissage, a kneading action; friction, circular movements and the deepest of the strokes; tapotement or “tapping,” which increases circulation in the areas being worked on; and vibration, a strong rhythmic shaking of the hands. An excellent treatment for stress related conditions.

  • Deep Tissue Massage/Trigger Point Therapy

Deep Tissue Massage/Trigger Point Therapy utilizes very slow, deep pressure  with a focus on the of release chronic pain patterns, softening adhesions, releasing trigger points, breaking up lactic acid and soothing sore muscles.  These techniques aid in muscle relaxation, flush fresh oxygenated blood into tissues, and promote removal of metabolic waste products that are a main cause of pain.  For many people with chronic painful muscle aches, deep tissue can be more relaxing than swedish massage. In some cases, however, clients may experience some mild muscle soreness a day or two following the massage similar to what may be experienced following vigorous exercise. These techniques are often incorporated into our medical/othopedic massage treatments.

  • Shiatsu

Shiatsu  is an Oriental form of bodywork  developed in Japan with roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine, which teaches that good health depends on the circulation of vital life energy (Qi or Chi) through the body’s invisible energy pathways, called meridians. Shiatsu massage is performed on a mat on the floor with the reciever wearing loose fitting, comfortable clothes. Shiatsu is the Japanese word for "finger pressure".  This pressure may be applied with fingers, hands, forearms, elbows or knees to the same points  and meridians that are used in acupuncture. A variety of assissted stretches are incorporated to enhance the effectiveness of  the treatment. These techniques are used for promoting relaxation and good health, stress reduction, pain relief, and increase flexibility.

  • Reiki/Therapeutic
    Touch/Craniosacral Therapy-Energy Therapies

I utilize these forms of energy healing modalities to enhance my hands on work. These are light-touch or no-touch techniques performed on fully clothed clients.

Reiki- One of the more mystical and powerful energy-balancing practices, involving the transmission of Reiki, or universal life energy, from practitioner  to recipient. The theory is that Reiki energy, which envelops and enlivens all life-forms, is available to everyone. Research has shown Reiki promotes both physical and emotional healing, relieves pain and aids in stress reduction.

Therapeutic Touch– Was developed jointly by a professor of nursing and a spiritual healer and is widely used in hospitals and other health care settings. It is a contemporary interpretation of ancient practices, including the laying on of hands. The goal is to clear and balance the recipient’s energy field in order to activate their innate capacity for healing. As in Reiki, the energy involved in the practice is believed to be universally available. The subject of some research, Therapeutic Touch has been demonstrated to induce relaxation and alleviate pain.

Craniosacral Therapy- A gentle, noninvasive, light touch therapy aimed at correcting imbalances in the body by focusing on the structural craniosacral system. This system extends from the cranium via a series of membranes through the spine and sacrum. Several hand positions and light touch manipulations are used to release restrictions in various regions of the body. These releases facilitate optimal performance of the brain and nervous system. Craniosacral therapy has proven effective for headaches/migraines, TMJ dysfunction, back/neck pain, and whiplash associated disorders.

  • Pregnancy/Prenatal Massage

This exciting and joyous time in a woman's life poses unique challenges for her body. Hormonal, emotional, and physical changes place new demands on the system. Carrying a baby inside you changes the body's center of gravity resulting in added stress for back, neck, shoulder, and abdominal muscles. Hormones released during pregnancy relax the ligaments allowing for changes in the pelvic region to accomodate the birth process. These pelvic changes often result in low back pain and discomfort. Massage can effectively treat these and other specific or general concerns during pregnancy.

Prenatal massage is specifically designed to treat the unique conditions and needs of the mother-to-be. Prenatal massage is usually performed in a side-lying position, with various cushions and bolsters used to obtain very comfortable positioning.

Some of the benefits of prenatal massage include:

    • Reduced back and joint pain
    • Improved circulation
    • Reduced edema
    • Reduced muscle tension and headaches
    • Improved sleep
    • Reduced stress and anxiety

  • Hot Stone Massage

Basalt stones are heated and applied to tight or sore muscles with soothing Swedish massage strokes alternating with  deep  tissue techniques for an extremely relaxing deeply therapeutic experience.
